The only portion of the British Isles to be occupied by the
German Wermacht, during World War 2, were the Channel Islands – Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark , Herm and Jethou.
The de-militarised group of Islands were to become part of Adolf Hitler’s ‘Atlantic Wall’ fortifications, in preparation for his intended invasion of the British mainland.
Caught in the middle were the innocent population, for whom five years of enemy occupation was to yield privations, trauma, starvation and even death.
Meeting the needs of the local community was very much part and parcel of the task for Church Ministers. This is the story of one of those – Rev Gilbert Dunk and his wife, Irene.
